Dialysis patients are more likely to develop mental health problems as a consequence of the profound burdens associated with managing their illness. They experience constant lifestyle disruptions on account of needing to endure painful and time-consuming treatment sessions 3x/week; adhering to strict dietary and fluid restrictions; and, experiencing a constant state of dependence on a machine. Dialysis patients endure uremic symptoms, sleep disorders, poor appetite, fatigue, infertility, sexual dysfunction, problems with bones, anemia, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal disorders, anger, discouragement, dissatisfaction and disappointment, all of which can lead to poor treatment compliance if psychologically neglected.

Dialysis patients experience high levels of existential boredom and life restrictions leading to feelings of impatience, frustration, and anger. Numerous complications inherent in living on dialysis will force confrontation with loss, death, and mortality. Leaving this ignored or unprocessed will impede acceptance and cause greater suffering.

Building resilience in dialysis means:

1. Pursuing positive meaning in life

2. Accepting dialysis as a part of daily life

3. Building willingness to live through meaningful relationships
